BRE (Building Research Establishment) is an important force within the construction and building industry. It is an international multi-disciplinary science organization with a mission to improve buildings and infrastructure through research and knowledge generation and their application. .

Business need

With a key focus on driving health, safety and well-being in the built environment, the organisation took over ownership of the YellowJacket application. This application is well known in the construction industry and is recognised as the leading online Health & Safety system that building, development and construction companies utilise.

By taking on the responsibility of this multi-faceted online H&S platform it meant BRE could make significant system enhancements and improve functionality; essentially it would further its agenda of making the built environment safer.

BRE certainly had the business knowledge to take the system forward, so to underpin this it sought technical capability to help make the desired changes.

These changes included:

  • migration (from the previous owner’s data-centres into its own)
  • technical support
  • daily maintenance
  • development of new functionality

BRE wanted to deliver YellowJacket as a greatly enhanced application that could be accessed and used in a mobile environment and deliver industry-best processes.

To complicate matters, BRE had a compressed time-frame to make the necessary changes and deliver this SharePoint-based system on schedule.

Selecting Business Agility

Business Agility, the SharePoint experts, were recommended to BRE as the best company to approach as it was capable of a highly agile approach with highly technically people.

Through the selection of these SharePoint experts, BRE was able to go live with its enhanced and functionally rich YellowJacket system on time.

Results and future plans

In addition to the SharePoint-based system being delivered on time and with greater enhancements for the YellowJacket user community, BRE have also benefited from the following:

  • reduced investment needed for development
  • lower support costs
  • access to a pool of SharePoint expertise
  • wider coverage of application across mobile platforms
  • a move away from black box 3rd party intellectual property for mobile service provision
  • an increase in YellowJacket’s adoption

Now with YellowJacket within BRE’s Site Smart , future plans are already underway. BRE and Business Agility continue to work in partnership on the continuous development of new features for the system since the project inception. This work is modifying and enhancing the YellowJacket app and that work carries on with new functionality being designed all the time.

“Working with Business Agility has allowed us to implement a SharePoint solution that totally encapsulates the YellowJacket system requirements. The project delivered met our immediate requirements as well as the long-term requirements of BRE, YellowJacket and its users.

Business Agility shared our ethos of wanting to create a trusted partnership and dependable, results-driven system.”
