Microsoft’s Compliance Manager could change your data governance strategy

At Microsoft’s annual Ignite conference this year, a new Compliance Manager was announced. To many, this will be a blessing. No matter what organisation you’re in, data compliance is essential. Whether you’re prepping for the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) in May 2018 or you feel as if your organisation may be out of date with best practice, the Microsoft Compliance Manager can help you.

Why is this important to me?

Microsoft’s compliance manager is an intelligent solution allowing you to manage your compliance all in one place. Firstly, it’s great timing for the GDPR) which is taking effect in May 2018; many businesses will be forming their GDPR strategy and will be looking to tools such as the Compliance Manager.

Secondly, GDPR aside, lots of companies have their own compliance policies to adhere to. Depending on the nature of your company (legal, government, other public body etc.) how you treat your data must be tailored well. Various organisations struggle to not only keep up to date with new regulations, but to communicate them to the wider organisation and encourage company-wide compliance. Being able to manage and monitor your compliance status in one place couldn’t be easier.

Everyone has rules to abide by, and Microsoft’ Compliance Manager can help you see where in your organisation you may need to make some tweaks or changes to your compliance strategy.

What does it do?

Compliance Manager helps you with 3 key aspects:

  • Enables you to perform real-time risk assessment on Microsoft Cloud services
  • Provides actionable insights to improve your data protection capabilities
  • Simplifies compliance processes through built-in control management and audit-ready reporting tools

With these three aspects, Compliance Manager provides a concise dashboard (similar to Power BI!) showcasing your compliance level against the regulatory requirements your organisation demands. You can get real-time risk assessments with this tool, which means you can find out instantly where you may need to make some changes.

As well as the dashboard, Compliance Manager gives you actionable insights into what your next steps need to be. For the controls you manage, you will receive recommended actions with step-by-step guidance for implementation and testing.

The dashboard is deliberately simple and easy to use, which means it’ll be easier to implement company-wide compliance.

When can I use it?

As of now Compliance Manager preview version itself will be free for Microsoft 365, Azure, and Dynamics 365 users. Microsoft are still assessing the nature of the final licensing and will provide more information when closer to general availability in 2018.
